Chinese rug design
Passing to the consideration of the tendency to mingle mythological designs with geometric and naturalistic ornamentation, we find it impossible to secure any clue to the reasons for some of the combinations of styles.
Very rarely is any definite plan demonstrated, as in an important rug in which a picture is reproduced in wools. In the details of the composition Perso-Chinese influences are introduced, but native Chinese superstition is illustrated in the design. It is considered an auspicious omen for swallows and sacred animals to approach a dwelling, as they are supposed to bring good luck and to avert evil.* In this design the deer is walking up the steps and birds hover over the roof of the house.
